QIU Zhijie
Born 1969 Fujian province
Tattoo 1, 1994
These photographs explore Qiu Zhijie's assertion that in our media-saturated age 'signs and codes have overpowered actual human beings, and our bodies have become merely their vehicles'.
In Tattoo 1 the character bu - meaning 'no' - is written across the artist's body and on the wall behind him, creating the illusion that it floats free of the body. In the adjacent photograph, a network of tacks wraps the body and its surroundings in a visual field with neither set boundaries nor clear meaning.

It's an honour to be working with him and i appreciate everything that i've learnt during this short period of apprenticeship. Just to be standing there observing how he does his work is just too good to be true. to see artists at work- an inspiration.
